If you’re passionate about boating and want to explore the beautiful waters of Spain, obtaining a Spanish Navigation Certificate, also known as the Licencia de Navegación, is a great way to get started. This certificate allows you to operate recreational boats and jet skis under specific conditions. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
What is the Navigation License?
The Navigation License allows you to navigate boats up to 6 meters in length without power limitations for daytime navigation, up to a maximum distance of 2 nautical miles from the coast. It also includes the operation of type C jet skis (up to 55 hp). Previously known as Titulín, this certification is no longer issued, but the Navigation License extends the attributions of the Titulín.
How Can I Obtain the Navigation License?
To obtain the Navigation License, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old. Minors from 16 years old can also obtain it by presenting parental consent.
- Psychotechnical Test: Pass a psychotechnical test, specifically for navigation qualifications, at a driver recognition center. The medical certificate can be delivered on the day of the course or in the previous days at the school.
- Theoretical Course: Complete a 2-hour theoretical course at an authorized nautical school.
- Practical Training: Complete basic safety and navigation practices, lasting 4 hours, at an authorized nautical school.
Do You Need to Take an Exam?
No, it is not necessary to pass any exam to obtain the Navigation License. You only need to complete the required course with 2 hours of theory and 4 hours of practice.
Where Are the Navigation License Course Practices Held?
The practical training can be carried out in inland waters, such as the San Juan reservoir in Madrid, or at sea, for example, the Alicante coast. Depending on the location of the course you choose, the place of the practices will be in one place or another.
What Documentation Do I Need to Obtain the Navigation License?
To issue the permit, you must present the following documents at your school, before or after completing the course:
- A photocopy of a valid ID or Passport.
- A psychotechnical medical certificate similar to those for a driver’s license.
It is important that when issuing the medical certificate, it is indicated that it is for obtaining the Navigation License.
What Powers Does the Navigation License Grant?
The Navigation License authorizes the operation of recreational boats up to 6 meters in length and navigation up to a maximum distance of 2 nautical miles from a port, marina, or shelter, during daylight only. It also allows operating jet skis up to 55 hp.
